- Summary:

A founding member of Gorey School of Art, Paul Carter has worked in the areas of education and nonprofit artist led initiatives for over 10 years now. Upon his appointment as Director of GSA in March 2011, he implemented a project plan to reestablish an artist-led exhibition centre in Gorey, which would be supported by Government and Enterprise with an aim to creating a stable but dynamic platform for the development of contemporary art in North Wexford.
As an artist, Carter relies on chance encounters with, as Lee Ufan describes, the other. Through paint, photography, video and installation, he searches for the uncertain border between reality, illusion and the imagination. Emerging from the artist's obsession with the nature of looking and seeing, Carter presents things that lie outside of time, things on the verge of disappearance and things that make the world more vividly visible.
From a sensibility of organic generation, Carter's work deepens our experience of place by extending beyond conventional notions of spatial containment and by exploring associations between sourced objects, place and the image.
Carter has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, the Switch Room Gallery, Belfast, the Eastlink Gallery, Shanghai, the International Center for Contemporary Art, New York and he appeared as an invited artist at the Éigse Arts Festival in Carlow. Carter's work appears in many important public and private collections including the OPW. His most recent exhibited work was 'Unbroken Line', a film commissioned by VISUAL Center for Contemporary Art, Carlow.
